Albert Einstien said that the denfinition of insanity was "doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result". My repetitive strain injury, of the muscle next to my shin, had been caused by overuse (30 marathons in 41 days). So, if I was to go back out, something had to change. I decided to walk the first marathon and see how things would hold together. I used walking poles to try and take some of the pressure off the muscle. I changed shoes. I had been using several old pairs and the folks at Impact Magazine gave me three new pairs to use (thank you).

I switched routes. The Cochrane Foothills Marathon course is beautiful but extremely hilly. Serge, at Cochrane Physio, had identified an inflexibility in my left ankle that could be causing a pressure point on the muscle in question, when climbing hills. The Cochrane West Point Marathon course, on the other hand, is along the Bow River and relatively flat. The outcome: I made it around in 8hrs 18mins. The shin feels pretty good, it twinged around the 30km mark but didn't deteriorate. After the marathon, I did the ice bath / hot tub routine and that helped. So, time for a good night's sleep and see what tomorrow brings.
