Today, I had the pleasure of running with someone who has been an integral part of Marathon Quest 250. I met Dr Bill Hanlon when I first arrived in Cochrane 6 years ago and it was in a discussion with him, last June, that the concept of 250 marathons in a year was finalized. When you consider his list of achievements, I knew there wasn't a better person I could chat to:

  • Founder and medical director of Basic Health International Foundation, based in Cochrane.
  • Provider of health care to high-need, remote mountain communities including Ethiopia, Honduras, Peru, Mongolia, and Tibet.
  • In 2007, climbed Mount Everest. This completed the climbing of the 7 highest mountains on the 7 continents.
  • In January 2010, completed a 47 day ski-trek across the Antarctic to the South Pole.

Our plan was to do a 42.2km run along the parthways in Calgary, not quite as arduous as some of his other trips. We met Runner Steve at the Good Earth cafe and headed down the Bow. Steve is the meteorologist for CTV so I quizzed him about the weather trend for the next 3 months. He said it'll get colder with snow. Fair enough.

It was a glorious day for a run. Most of the leaves were down so I had to watch my footing for roots and cracks in the pavement. We finished at 3.10pm. It's been a long week, that was my 6th marathon in a row. I'm off tomorrow. Bill sponsored the marathon for $1,000, so that gives 20 children a Right To Play program for a year. Much appreciated.

A. Anything you like! He can't hear you!
