Anniversaries are the glue that keeps any calendar together. I just got my 2013 weekly day timer and the first thing I did was pencil in all the important events. Birthdays come top of the list. Family, friends, pets, they all have a place and are highlighted so Sue doesn't forget them. Many key anniversaries are already in the book such as Valentine's Day and Halloween and are so ingrained that everyone knows them. Some are new and driven by tragedy such as 9/11, or money as such Black Friday (post American Thanks Giving).

Some are just plain weird. The Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake is an annual event held on the Spring Bank Holiday (last Monday of May) at Cooper's Hill near Gloucester in the Cotswolds region of England. It is traditionally by and for the people who live in the local village of Brockworth, but now people from all over the world take part. The event takes its name from the hill on which it occurs.

The event is traditional. In recent years, it has been managed in a quasi-official manner, but the events of 2010 and 2011 took place spontaneously without any management. Spectators were furious at the prospect of being charged a £20 entry fee.

From the top of the hill a round of Double Gloucester cheese rolled, and competitors race down the hill after it. The first person over the finish line at the bottom of the hill wins the cheese. In theory, competitors are aiming to catch the cheese, however it has around a one second head start and can reach speeds up to 70 mph (112 km/h), enough to knock over and injure a spectator. Traditionally, the winner of each year's contest is expected to perform a shirtless victory ascent of Cooper's Hill where he or she will return the cheese to its ceremonial plinth. This is done in order to symbolize the eternal cycle of man's creation, release, pursuit and re-capture of his dairy products. This is one that should not be missed.

One anniversary, a little closer to home, is the 3rd Annual Marathon Quest 250 Run / Walk in Cochrane in Cochrane. The date is easy to remember as it's on December 31st. The first running of this event was on December 31st 2010 and it was the final of the 250 marathons I completed that year. Last year we held the 2nd Annual event and families and friends used it as a way of getting a little exercise before the New Year. This year we are hoping to get more people out to enjoy the 2.5km loop along the majestic Bow River. I've put a call in for slightly warmer weather. The last two years it's been -32C so any improvement would help. The aid station is provided by Pat Palette Pleasers so runners can expect hot chocolate and cookies to keep them going. For the young and young at heart there are bouncy castles.

Registration is on the day and is a donation to Right To Play at the table in the foyer. A final thought; in life it's not about doing a lot, it's about doing something.

Quote of the Day

"Jogging is very beneficial. It's good for your legs and feet. It's also very good for the ground. It makes it feel needed."

Charles Schulz, Peanuts

Marathon #250 on December 31st 2010. Making the ground feel good.
